[TRANS] The musical ‘Hadestown’ delivers the emotion of its premiere with 37 live numbers.

The Korean performance of ‘Hadestown’, a musical that adds a modern interpretation to Greek and Roman mythology, a new variation on a myth from thousands of years ago, is scheduled to begin its second season in July.

The musical “Hadestown” naturally intersects the story of Orpheus heading to the underworld to retrieve his wife, Eurydice, who died suddenly, and Persephone’s story of spring and summer on the ground and spending autumn and winter on the ground with her husband, Hades, in the underground. Hermes, who plays the role of a narrator who conveys all these stories to the audience and guides Orpheus to the underworld, was also recreated, taking inspiration from the mythological character who appears as a messenger of Zeus. The two stories that intersect on stage constantly remind the audience of love, sing of the anxiety, doubt, and salvation of the times, and convey hope for life, making it a story that anyone can sympathize with, even though the time and place are not clearly stated.

The musical ‘Hadestown’, which debuted off-Broadway in 2016, was nominated in 14 of the 15 categories that a musical can win at the Tony Awards held three months after the official opening of Broadway in 2019, and won the Best Picture award. It won a total of eight categories, including Best Directing, Best Music, Best Arrangement, Best Supporting Actor, Best Stage Design, Best Lighting, and Best Sound, making it the most talked-about film of the year. In addition, it even won the Best Musical Album award at the 2020 Grammy Awards, America’s most prestigious music awards ceremony.

And in 2021, the world’s first licensed performance, ‘Hadestown’s First Korean Performance’, began. Despite the pandemic situation that no one expected at the time, the production maintained consistent production conditions during the six-month performance period, drawing praise from audiences and critics. In the premiere season, which featured a total of 233 stages, including performances in Daegu and Busan in 2022, he won three awards at the 6th Korea Musical Awards, including the highest honor, the grand prize, as well as the male lead award and female supporting actor award. The message of the work, which sings of hope that tomorrow will be better than today by doing your best in the given daily life, comforted the audience who were struggling during the pandemic situation at the time and became a source of encouragement that allowed them to dream of hope once again.

‘Hadestown’, which also opened in the West End in February this year and was nominated for the Best Musical Revival category at the Laurence Olivier Awards, the highest award in the British performing arts industry, finally meets Korean audiences once again. With shaking lights, a rotating stage, and 37 live numbers mixing American folk, blues, and jazz, the emotion of the premiere will unfold at the Charlotte Theater.

The Korean performance of the musical “Hadestown” is set to be announced in May and its first ticket will open on July 12.
