At the 15th Daegu International Musical Festival (DIMF), the Korea-Taiwan joint global musical “Toward” will be unveiled for the first time.
Toward is a work that tells the story of Lim Whee-in, a Chinese woman who proudly lived her life as a woman in the pre-modern and conservative 1930s and made countless achievements from architecture, art, and literature.
The special relationship between the four organizations that have worked together to produce this work is eye-catching. At the 13th DIMF in 2019, the Taoyuan City Hall of Fame, which supports Taiwanese art in general, hosted the ‘DIMF Global Musical Seminar’ in which 41 people from Asian musicals including China, Taiwan, and Malaysia participated. It is an organization that continues to cooperate for cultural exchange. C Musical Production, which is leading the creative musical market in Taiwan, participated in DIMF with works such as ‘Man to Meet’ (12th DIMF) and ‘One Find Day’ (13th DIMF), receiving favorable reviews from domestic and foreign audiences. It is a representative creative group in Taiwan that continues to produce high-quality work.
Here, the troupe Run to Death, the only global musical festival in Korea and support for various creative musicals, is continuing its creative challenges with musicals such as ‘The Disappearance of the Crown Prince’ and ‘Scarlet Letter’, encompassing a wide range of experimental, originality, and popularity. DIMF, which is strengthening its role as an Asian musical platform through business promotion, has united for a global project.
In addition, the collaboration of Korean and Taiwanese staff in all areas of musical production, including planning and production, including Taiwan’s Jang Sim-ja, who is active in directing, producing and composing numerous masterpieces such as the play “Oedipus” and “Abi, Dialect.”
After the World Premier performance at DIMF, “Toward” plans to hold tour performances throughout Taiwan, including Taoyuan Gwangye Hall and Taichung National Theater, and China tour performances for the 2022 season from November this year.
In this premiere, new actors, such as “DIMF Musical Star” and “DIMF Musical Academy,” were cast in the main and supporting roles that DIMF discovered directly through talent training programs. Kim Da-yoon (1st DIMF Musical Star College/Best General Division Award) and Kim Do-yeon (3rd DIMF Musical Star Middle/High School Grand Prize) as well as Song Chang-geun, Wang Jun-hyung, Seo Kwang-hyun, Oh Dong-hyun and Jeong Se-eun will appear as the main characters.
DIMF Executive Chairman Bae Seong-hyeok said, “The musical ‘Toward’, which started as a global musical project, will impress everyone beyond nationality by telling the story of a woman who tried to unfold her talents in an oppressed era. Through this work with organizations that have continued to exchange, we will make further efforts for the shared growth of the Asian musical market through cultural and artistic exchanges. We will strengthen our role as a bridgehead to introduce them.”
Meanwhile, “Toward” will be performed at the Ayang Art Center in Daegu on the 26th and 27th.
